All open air burning in RURAL areas REQUIRES a valid PERMIT.
Open air burning is NOT permitted in URBAN areas at any time of the year.

By not burning your waste, you’re helping to preserve the air quality in the sensitive Fraser Valley air shed. Open Air Burning Application

  • Completing this application is only the first step in acquiring an open air burning permit.
  • Open Air Burning Permits are subject to change by order of the Fire Chief, without notice.
  • An application must be submitted at least 14 days in advance of the desired burn date.
  • Contractors must have a valid City of Abbotsford Business Licence.
  • All fees are payable before a permit will be issued.
  • Open Air Burning Permits are valid only for the property they are issued for and are NOT transferable to another property.
  • Open Air Burning Permits expire and are not reusable.
  • Burn Preparation Guidelines must be reviewed by the applicant prior to applying for a permit.

Type of Open Air Burning Permitted:

  • Registered Farm Properties Only. Agricultural is material which consists of agricultural vegetation and is cut down on your property and piled before burning as per Open Air Burning Regulations and Guidelines. All Burning Must Meet the Required Minimum Clearances.
    • Maximum Pile size  3x3x1m (10x10x3ft)
    • *$20 per pile per day.
    • Maximum one (1) piles per day for one (1) day
  • Land Clearing material vegetation which consists of trees, stumps, large branches and/or large quantities of brush and is cut down on your property and piled before burning as per Open Air Burning Regulations and Guidelines. All Burning Must Meet the Required Minimum Clearances.
    • Pile size less than 10x10x3m (30x30x10ft)
    • Site inspection required - *$115.00/hr. (min $115.00).
    • *$200.00/pile/day + $50.00 Administration Fee
    • Maximum 2 piles per day and Maximum 3 days
    • 14 days break in between burns

  • 1000m (3281 ft) to Abbotsford Regional Hospital
  • 500m (1640 ft) to schools/ care facilities
  • 100m (300 ft) to neighboring occupied dwellings
  • 45m (150 ft) to hydro/telephone/cable utility lines (including underground)
  • 45m (150 ft) to structures and combustibles (includes treeline/brush)
  • 15m (50 ft) away from all property lines

  • I hereby make application for an Open Air Burning Permit in accordance with the information stated above and declare that the information provided is complete and understand that failure to provide correct information may result in fines and/or charges.
     
  • I understand that I cannot burn without an permit. 
     
  • I understand that the burning of any material not declared in this application will result in fines and/or charges that are subject to the Cost Recovery Procedures stated in Bylaw No. 1513-2006.
     
  • I understand that permits are NOT transferable to another property and are only valid for the approved dates. A change request must be submitted and approved by the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service if for environmental reasons or business interruption the burn is not permitted on the originally approved dates.
     
  • If any change in relation to the permit occurs I agree to notify Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, Fire Inspector.
     
  • The Open Air Burning Permit must be in the possession of the attendant and the attendant MUST be on site during the burn.
     
  • I have read, understand and agree to the Regulations and Prohibitions as outlined in Bylaw No. 1513-2006.
     
  • I further agree to comply with all bylaws now in place or which hereafter may come into force in the City of Abbotsford.
     
  • I understand that the permit information will be made public under the authority of the Local Government Act and the City's bylaws.
     
  • Fees for inspections and permits are payable prior to the inspections being conducted and the permit being issued.
